Ben Sink, Trombone

Played with the PSO since: 2016

At what age did you start playing the instrument you play in the PSO?

tarted playing trombone when I was 11 years old.

Did you learn another instrument first? If so, which one?

When I was little, my parents had a baby grand piano in our living room that I used to tinker with and sound-out melodies by ear.

Why did you choose your current instrument?

My older brother Adam also played the trombone. I remember watching him march in parades with the Central High School band and thinking the trombone looked really cool. When we were allowed to choose band instruments in 5th grade, I knew right away that I wanted to play trombone.

What do you like about playing with a symphony orchestra?

I love playing in all types of ensembles, but nothing really compares to a symphony orchestra. The range of sound and expression one can achieve through the integration of so many disparate parts is awe-inspiring. The coordination, camaraderie and individual commitment required make orchestra musicians a special breed in my book.

What is your favorite piece to play on your instrument?

The piece that really inspired me to love orchestral trombone was Mahler’s first symphony. When I was a senior in high school, I had the opportunity to play with the Boston Youth Symphony during their 50th season. That year, we performed

Dvořák’s Cello Concerto with Yo Yo Ma at Symphony Hall and then toured Germany and Czechia playing Mahler’s Symphony No. 1. I’m thrilled to be playing both pieces again this season with the PSO.

How do you spend your time outside of the PSO?

By day, I am a paraprofessional at Somersworth Middle School. I also love playing tennis, gardening and snowboarding.

Do you play with other groups? If so, which ones?
I am a member of the Off/Axis Big Band and a regular player with the Rockingham Groove Collective.

Tell us about your musical education.
I was heavily involved in the band and jazz programs at Hillside Middle School and Central High School in Manchester. In college, I had the privilege of playing in the St. Olaf Orchestra for four years.
