PROGRAM

The Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra invites you to help us usher in the spring season in a big, big way. We are proud to present the most iconic musical works by one of the most beloved composers of all time, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. The impact and influence of this monumental composition is far-reaching, timeless and irrefutable. The symphony affected musicians beginning with Brahms and Bruckner continuing on through to the 20th century with Dvořák and Bartók and continues to influence even modern day pop music. Fragments from the symphony have been used for everything from music in television and radio commercials, to melodies in children's toys, adapted for church hymns and even as an anthem for the Unified Olympic Team of Germany during the division of the country amid the Cold War. Indeed, it's hard to imagine a person who has not heard a melody from this classical masterpiece.

The symphony was completed in 1824 and is the first example of vocal soloists and a full chorus being fully integrated into a symphonic setting earning its nickname as "the Choral" symphony. In addition to the chorus, the Ninth Symphony is the first example of a five movement symphony contrasting with the standard four movements up to that point. Even more remarkable is that Beethoven composed the entire symphony despite having lost nearly all of his hearing by that time! All of this combined with the deeply emotional power contained in the music itself, this is a concert not to be missed. Therefore, we will be offering subsequent performances of the work, March 18th & 19th. The PSO will be joined by Amare Cantare, Portsmouth Pro Musica, St. John's Choir, Portsmouth High School Choir and local soloists to proudly present Beethoven's Ninth Symphony to you. Get your tickets early for this concert that is sure to sell out.
